Beaver facts
- The sound of trickling water triggers an innate damming response — beavers have been recorded piling mud onto loudspeakers playing a recording of a stream.
- The largest beaver dam ever found is around 850 metres (2,790 ft) long in Wood Buffalo National Park, Alberta. It was spotted on satellite imagery in 2007 and is likely the work of several generations.
- Dams are built with an upstream face of mud and stones and a downstream lattice of sticks — structurally very close to how humans build an earth-fill dam.
- A beaver's incisors are orange because of the iron in the enamel, which makes the front edge harder than the back and self-sharpens as it wears.
- Beaver ponds slow water down so much that they measurably reduce downstream flood peaks and raise the water table in a drought.
